Sealy Avenue Improvements

Galveston’s Sealy Avenue Improvements project addressed challenges posed by aging road infrastructure and increased traffic near City Hall, including large vehicles from a new nearby fire station. The project removed existing pavement and concrete curbs while upgrading underground sanitary sewer and water utilities. The previous stormwater system was not connected to the greater City drainage infrastructure, so the addition of a new drainage system alleviated prior flooding issues. New concrete pavement incorporated standardized 6-inch curbing, replacing dangerously tall and inconsistent curbs. Geotechnical studies were used to engineer the roadway for both immediate functionality and sustainable accommodation of heavy vehicles, including fire trucks. The project included approximately 3,000 feet of concrete roadway, 3,500 feet of drainage piping, 450 feet of sanitary piping, and 1,100 feet of water piping.

Funding was secured through a Texas General Land Office grant, with matching contributions from the City. The Sealy Avenue Improvements enhanced the aesthetics and functionality of the transportation infrastructure surrounding City Hall, providing improved handicap accessibility and a continuous sidewalk along the entire project length.
