Rehabilitation and flood-hardening of 13 Port Arthur lift stations.
A total of 13 lift stations in Port Arthur were rehabilitated using HMGP grant funding to withstand future flood risks and improve performance. The Pioneer Park lift station was revamped for increased flow capacity and efficiency by converting it to a single large wet well, replacing traditional pumps with submersible pumps, upgrading and relocating the electrical system, and adding new fencing and concrete. The Pioneer Park lift station became a model for future projects due to its innovation and success, providing a standard for implementing disaster-hardened infrastructure. The remaining 12 lift stations were also upgraded to reduce flood risks, including replacement of existing electrical controls, relocating electrical systems above the floodplain, upgrading ventilation to meet TCEQ standards, and raising access hatches above the floodplain.
During Hurricane Harvey, many Port Arthur lift stations became inoperable due to vulnerabilities to standing water, highlighting the urgent need for these upgrades. This project strengthened the existing lift stations, ensuring public safety, protecting property, and maintaining efficient wastewater management systems against increasingly unpredictable weather and flood risks. With the successful rehabilitation of the Pioneer Park lift station and the other 12 lift stations, Port Arthur’s infrastructure is now more resilient and better prepared for future challenges.
