The Pleasure Island Marina Rehabilitation project in Port Arthur, Texas, represented a crucial endeavor aimed at both improving the deteriorating conditions of the marina and enhancing its aesthetic appeal. This initiative sought to address numerous challenges stemming from the aging infrastructure, including dilapidated piers, failing roofs, and the need for overall reconstruction following damage from hurricanes Ike and Rita.


The project included the installation of 54,000 square feet of 18-inch wide vinyl sheet piling, 30 timber fixed docks, a tie-back system for bulkhead reinforcement, and the replacement of essential utilities such as water lines and electrical conduits. Addressing the corrosive nature of saltwater and the region’s susceptibility to hurricanes posed significant challenges, prompting the incorporation of innovative solutions like a wave break system to protect the newly constructed marina from storm surges.

One of the project’s notable aspects was the strategic approach to long-term sustainability and resilience. By opting for durable materials and innovative design elements, such as the wave break system, the team ensured the marina’s viability in the face of future environmental challenges. Funding for the project was provided by the Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMA), highlighting the collaborative effort between public and private entities to revitalize essential coastal infrastructure and mitigate risks associated with natural disasters.
