Drainage study and design of 30-acre detention pond with controlled outfall for flood mitigation.

The initial engineering study for the A3A drainage area was aimed at mitigating flooding issues and evaluating the benefits of a 39-acre detention pond along the A3A canal. Initially conceived to assess the proposed pond’s impact on stormwater management, the project was able to adjust the detention pond design size to 30 acres due to the construction of a football field over a portion of the intended area. The findings of the engineering drainage study conducted by AWC allowed for the reduction of the overall size of the pond based on the calibration of the drainage model to real-world rainfall data.

The project began with reported issues of flooding during heavy storm events, which caused concern for potential damage to nearby properties and prompted complaints from residents in the area. Recognizing the urgent need for effective flood control measures, the project team devised a comprehensive plan that included the construction of an innovative outfall structure to control the time of concentration for held water. This structure played a crucial role in managing the flow of water, allowing the detention pond to absorb the initial surges during storms and subsequently discharge the water through two smaller controlled surges.

One of the key challenges faced during the project was the need to demonstrate the efficacy of the detention pond in reducing flood levels and protecting properties. To achieve this, the project team conducted an extensive study and multiple simulations to analyze the pond’s performance under various storm scenarios. The results of the study confirmed the engineering design, showing a significant reduction in water levels during storm events, validating the effectiveness of the detention pond in mitigating flood risks.

Funding for the project was secured through a FEMA grant, highlighting the recognition of the project’s importance in enhancing community resilience to flooding. The successful completion of the A3A Detention Pond and Study not only addresses immediate flooding concerns but also provides valuable insights, protection, and data for future flood control projects in the region. By demonstrating the benefits of innovative engineering solutions in managing stormwater and protecting communities from natural disasters, the engineering solutions of AWC help to protect communities and property through intelligent and proactive design achievements.
