Water distribution system expansion and transmission main installation to provide potable water redundancy for the west end of Galveston Island.
The 24-Inch Water Line expansion project involved the construction of 18,317 linear feet of 24-inch water line, 10,585 linear feet of 10-inch water line, 2,216
linear feet of 8-inch water line, and 205 linear feet of 6-inch water line, spanning 3.5 miles of city streets. One of the significant challenges faced was navigating
the project route, which included crossing two TxDOT highways, a US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) regulated water body, and a busy city street,
necessitating over 5,000 linear feet of horizontal directional drilling to overcome these obstacles.
The primary goals of the project were to establish water supply redundancy for the west end of Galveston Island and to ensure residents’ access to a reliable source of potable water. This was achieved through the construction of a dedicated water distribution main connecting key pump stations and expanding the city’s water infrastructure.
Relying on a single source of potable water for the west end of Galveston Island posed several significant dangers. If this single source were to experience an
outage due to infrastructure issues, maintenance, or any unforeseen events, the entire community would be left without access to clean, safe drinking water. This
could lead to severe disruptions in daily life, impacting residents’ health, safety, and overall well-being. By connecting the City’s main pump station directly to the pump station serving the west end through a sophisticated and well-engineered water network, redundancy in the water supply system was established, allowing residents to have confidence in the system that provides critical, potable water for the daily needs.
